Logistics leaders sail through graduation

Three managers at logistics firm AV Dawson are the first cohort of graduates to successfully complete a new leadership programme at the business.
The year-long programme, which is accredited by the Leadership & Management Institute (LMI), has delivered an 18% improvement in the three managers’ effectiveness as leaders.

The course, which includes modules on leadership and vision, motivating people to produce and delegation skills, was delivered by Redworth Coaching’s Neale Carter as part of AV Dawson’s Skills Academy; an organisation-wide programme launched last year to invest in the development of its workforce.

Paul Scott, Craig Rowley and Garry Summerfield, all managers from different parts of the business, were identified for the first programme as a result of the potential the business saw in them.
The three amigos, as the cohort affectionately called themselves - as a result of the teamwork and bonding that the programme also delivered – have come to realise much broader benefits than they had first anticipated.
Garry Summerfield, office manager of AV Dawson’s offsite services based on the British Steel site in Lackenby said: “The course has been invaluable; we’ve achieved massive results on both a personal and business front.”

Garry is now training his son’s football team and is keen to complete his coaching badges. He continued: “I’m finding I have the confidence and skills to do things now that I’d never have done before doing this programme.”

Ray King, LMI’s UK director said: “I am really impressed with AV Dawson; not only as a business but also the obvious team ethos and commitment it has developed within its people.
