Chiefs call for east coast rail investment

BUSINESS leaders have called for east coast rail upgrades to be driven up the Government's agenda following a bid to boost freight capacity in the North-west.

Yesterday, Network Rail (NR) announced a £530m masterplan to improve train services on congested routes in northern England.

It included doubling the number of freight rail routes from the West Coast Main Line to Manchester's Trafford Park to make it easier for larger containers now used by shipping companies to move across the northern network.

But Teesside chiefs say funds should also be channeled into infrastructure improvements along the east side of the country - including vital upgrades that would allow containers to be sent via rail from the Teesport railhead operated by AV Dawson to the East Coast Main Line (ECML).
